The 2017 Meeting of the
International Society for History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Biology
(ISHPSSB) will occur from 16 to 21 July, 2017, in São Paulo, Brazil. It will be
held conjointly with the ABFHiB 2017 Brazilian History and Philosophy of Biology
Meeting (EHFB). The International Society for History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of
Biology (ISHPSSB) brings together scholars from diverse disciplines, including
the life sciences as well as history, philosophy, and social studies of
science. ISHPSSB conferences are known for innovative and transdisciplinary
sessions, as well as for fostering informal, co-operative exchanges and
on-going collaborations. After nearly thirty years of growth, the ISHPSSB can
claim to be the leading international society of its kind.
The biennial gathering of the ISHPSSB is its main raison d'être.
The Society was founded in 1989 with the aim of organizing a conference
bringing together current research on biology as a discipline. In the year
before a general meeting, bids are sought for hosting the next edition, and the
Site Selection Committee announces the winning bid during the General Assembly
of the Meeting. Montréal
Recent previous meetings were held in Vienna (2003), Guelph (2005),
Exeter (2007), Brisbane (2009), Salt Lake City (2011), Montpellier (2013) and
Montréal (2015) and have attracted up to six hundred participants from all
regions of the world.

The first annual ABFHiB Meeting occurred in 2003. The 13th meeting took place in July 2015, in the
Institute of Biosciences of the University of São Paulo – the same place where
the joint ISHPSSB & ABFHiB meeting will happen.
The Brazilian events are attended by a small but persistent community of
around 150 researchers, mostly from Brazil, but including scholars from nearby
South American countries and invited keynote speakers from Europe and North
America. ABFHiB 2015 Meeting
The Brazilian Association of Philosophy and History of Biology
(Associação Brasileira de Filosofia e História da Biologia – ABFHiB) was
founded on August 17, 2006, during the Fourth Brazilian Philosophy and History
of Biology Meeting, in São Paulo, SP. The goal of ABFHiB is to promote and
disseminate researches on the history and philosophy of biology, establishing
cooperation and communication between scholars. Besides Brazilians, some
researchers from other South American countries – especially Argentina – are
also members of ABFHiB and participate in those meetings.
