ISHPSSB & ABFHiB 2017 Meeting

Submission of papers

Main guidelines

There are two main forms of involvement in the joint ISHPSSB & ABFHiB 2017 meeting:

1) Visitors – people who will only attend to the conference, without presentation of papers or active participation in other activities

2) Participants – people who submitted sessions, posters or papers for presentation during the conference

Visitors should fill the pre-registration form, from October 2016 to April 2017. Payment of the visitor conference fee will be made between March 1st and April 30th 2017. See deadlines and checklist.

Participants may submit:
a) Organized session: standard talks session
b) Organized session: diverse format session
c) Individual papers (oral presentation)
d) Individual papers (poster presentation)

Submissions are now closed.

When you click submit a form, whether for an oral presentation, poster, or session, Google Drive opens a window with text stating that the submission was done. The system is very secure and therefore we do not use sending confirmation e-mails.

The four submission types are explained as follows:

 Organized Sessions

These activities are submitted by a single session organizer who must also be one of the participants in the session. All sessions will have exactly 90 minutes. This will allow people to move between sessions. Individuals may submit, or may participate in, up to two Organized Sessions. There are two different types of Organized Session:
* Standard talks session
* Diverse format session

The organizer can either invite the other participants directly, in order to submit a closed proposal; or she/he may use the Conference Board to post an Open Organized Session proposal (title and abstract of the open session), inviting other participants to contact her/him before submitting a proposal. The suggestion of open organized sessions begins on August 1st, 2016. Notice that proposing an Open Organized Session is just a preliminary step for submitting a closed proposal.

a) Organized session: standard talks session (90 minutes)

Each session proposal should name three speakers, plus a Chair, who can be one of the speakers but need not be.  In these sessions, each speaker will have 30 minutes total (including discussion).  This submission format requires a session title and abstract, titles and abstracts for each talk, as well as names, affiliations, and emails for all participants. It is possible to submit a double Organized Session, with the same title, six speakers, using two 90 minutes slots.

When you are ready to submit your session, follow this link.

b) Organized session: diverse format session (90 minutes)

Each session should have at least two participants, including a chair who must be one of the participants. These sessions allow a variety of formats, and may be organized as roundtables, panels, dialogues, longer talks, lightning talks, commentaries, films, short theater presentation, interpretative dances, etc. This submission format requires a session title and abstract, as well as names, affiliations, and emails for all participants; further information germane to the particular format may also be included by the session organizer. You can find the sessions of this kind that were introduced at the 2015 Montréal ISHPSSB meeting, searching the following web page for the phrase “DIVERSE FORMAT”: https://ishpssb2015.uqam.ca/programs/detailed-program.html

When you are ready to submit your session, follow this link.

c) Individual papers (oral presentation)

Notice that an "individual oral paper" can have two or more authors; the name merely indicates that this is a communication proposed individually, that is, not making part of an organized session.

This submission format involves submitting an individual paper that requires participant name, affiliation, email, and a title and abstract. Full names, affiliation and email of co-authors (if any) is also required. The submission should be made by the person who will present the paper at the meeting. The paper presentation must be no more than 20 minutes in length, with additional 10 minutes for discussion.  Individual Paper submissions will be grouped by the Program Committee and scheduled into 90 minutes sessions. Individuals may submit only one Individual Paper. Before submitting your individual paper, you might benefit from looking at the Conference Board to check if there is a proposal of an Organized Session where your contribution might fit.

When you are ready to submit your individual paper, follow this link.

d) Individual papers (poster presentation)

The main rationale behind deciding to submit a poster or oral presentation should concern the presenter's decision on what fits better the kind of discussion your paper needs. The standard of appraisal of submissions for ISHPSSB meeting remains as it has always been: that is, we maintain the longstanding past practice according to which ISHPSSB meeting is very much a place where people are welcome to present works in progress (oral or poster). Posters can be a good option also for those who do not feel comfortable in making an oral presentation in English.

Notice that an "individual paper" can have two or more authors; the name merely indicates that this is a communication proposed individually, that is, not making part of an organized session.

The submission of a poster requires participant name, affiliation, email, and a title and abstract. Full names, affiliation and email of co-authors (if any) is also required. Individuals may submit only one Poster.

When you are ready to submit your poster, follow this link.

Participation rule: the simple rule of two

Any individual can appear at most twice on the program (speaker, co-author, commentator, roundtable participant, poster author) in addition to serving as a session chair.

Other submission requirements

All submissions will require the completion of a checklist featuring themes and topics that will assist the program chairs in evaluating and scheduling the submission. We encourage session organizers to attend especially to considerations of interdisciplinarity and diversity, both of which are valued by the ISHPSSB community.

Notice that only papers addressing historical, philosophical and social features of Biology can be accepted for presentation. Contributions on any branch of Biology that do not address those standpoints, or contributions to the history, philosophy and social studies of other sciences, are outside the scope of this conference. Interdisciplinary approaches and papers tackling educational issues of history, philosophy and social studies of Biology are welcome.

Due to the international scope of the conference, all papers should be presented in English, independently of the nationality of the speaker.

Submission of sessions, papers and posters should follow the detailed proposal guidelines, and should be submitted from October 1st 2016 to January 15th 2017.
