Public transportation (underground and buses) in
Brazil is cheap but can be challenging for visitors. Taxis are not expensive,
and there are smartphone applications that facilitate their use. The conference
local organizing committee offers an optional paid shuttle service from
selected hotels, to and from the conference venue.
Entrance of "metrô" station Butantã (close to USP)
The subway system, in Brazil, is called “metrô”. Buses
are called “ônibus”. The single trip fare in São Paulo, regardless of the
distance you travel, is now (beginning
of 2016) R$3,80 (about one American dollar), either by bus or by subway.
If you need to take both, the combined fare is R$ 5,92.
São Paulo "metrô" station, off-peak time
During peak hours, public transportation may be
very crowded and most passengers will be unable to sit. If you are not familiar
with the path of buses and their stops, it may be very difficult to get to the
correct destination. In the case of subway (underground trains), it is easier
to identify the stations.
There are many hotels and hostels within walking
distance to the subway stations. From the suggested hotels, access to the
University of São Paulo can made by underground, plus 10 minutes by bus.
Brazilian taxis have the usual luminous indicator "taxi", and red license plates.
Taxis, in Brazil, are not expensive. Let us take as
an example a passenger travelling from her/his hotel at Avenida Paulista to the
Institute of Biosciences
of University of São Paulo. The distance is about 10 km. During daytime, the
common taxi fare will be about R$35,00 (nearly US$10); during the night, about
R$43,00. Special (luxury) taxis have higher fares: about R$51,00 and R$64,00,
respectively. Notice that most recommended hotels will be nearer than this
For people willing to use taxis in São Paulo, there
are some smartphone applications (such as EasyTaxi and 99Taxis) that can be
very useful. They use the smartphone GPS device to detect your localization,
and call nearby taxis.
The organizing committee will also arrange an
optional paid shuttle service, using buses and vans, from some selected
hotels (the list will be available in January 2017). The daily cost of this
service, from selected hotels to the conference venue, and return,
will be US$10.
