With a folder containing historical-architectural description of the buildings, you can take a pleasant stroll along the tree-lined paths, visiting the museums and exhibitions of the Butantan Institute.

Brazilian live music

From 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., you can rest with some Brazilian live music ("bossa nova", "chorinho", "samba"), performed by "Roda de Samba dos Amigos", (Friends' Jam Session).

Sambas, many sambas, played by friends that celebrate music, friendship, and love.

Perhaps the sentence above is the best one to synthesize the spirit and energy of this samba jam session that started in the backyard of one of the members, in 2009, and that nowadays frequently plays in São Paulo.

Roda de Samba dos Amigos, RSA, has a rich and diverse repertoire that holds selected works of Nélson Cavaquinho, Cartola, Elton Medeiros, Dona Ivone Lara, Germano Matias, Paulinho da Viola, Bide, Marçal, Batatinha, Eduardo Gudin, Chico Buarque, Candeia, Adoniran Barbosa, Noel Rosa, Geraldo Filme, Paulo César Pinheiro, Roberto Ribeiro, Baden Powell, João Nogueira, as well as some contemporary litlle-known artists.

The band’s instrumental composition is vast: guitar, cavaquinho, mandolin, clarinet, transverse flute, pandeiro, low tom, ring-repique, conga, cuica, tambourine, and other smaller ones. This allows an audio trip through samba’s variations.

The Jam Session also plays some classics of choro (equivalent for “cry” or “lament”), bossa nova (roughly translates into “new way”) and the band’s own sambas.

An RSA’s highlighting feature is that the samba does not stop, be it a two-hours or a six-hours presentation. The meetings are known for informality, joy, and the public’s collaboration for a big celebration. It is a big party without, however, losing attention or rigor that well-played samba demands.

Among the presentations, the group has payed tribute to masters of samba (like Cartola, Paulinho da Viola, Chico Buarque, Noel Rosa, Adoniran Barbosa, João Nogueira, Nélson Cavaquinho...), playing around 90 continuous minutes of the honored compositions. Besides the tribute, in the same evening, they play other four hours of samba.

RSA's members are Matheus Bozó, Laerte Fernandes, Dani Turcheto, Gustavo Eiji, Cassio Portuga, Santiago Steiner, Lucila De Paz Ferrini, Rodrigo de Jesus e Newton Neves.

It will be followed by a 40-minute outdoor movie section for you to watch documentaries from the 1920s to the 1940s about Butantan and Brazilian flora and fauna. The exhibition "Moving Science", curated by Adilson Mendes, will present the films:

- Serpentes do Brasil (Brazilian snakes), by Alexandre Wulfes, 1941, 6 '
Some typical examples of snakes from Brazilian tropical lands, such as the small snake-cipó and the immense sucuri. At the Butantan Institute, in São Paulo, a great diversity of species is used for the study and withdrawal of the antiofidic serum.

- O puraquê (The electric eel), by Humberto Mauro, 1939, 12 '
Summary of the research of Dr. Carlos Chagas on the electrical properties of "poraquê", the electric eel.

- Instituto Butantan, conducted by Rossi Film (Brazil, 1920circa, 13 ')
The phases of preparation of antiofidic serum at the Butantan Institute. This process, described at the beginning of the twentieth century, still develops in the institution today.
