Arriving to Brazil

In São Paulo

After immigration and customs clearing, you will arrive to the public area of the airport.

You have probably brought no Brazilian currency from your country and you will need to obtain some Brazilian money at the airport.

Exchange bureau at GRU

Several  banks keep exchange bureaus at the São Paulo international airport. All of them accept US dollars and Euros; some of them also accept other currencies. It is advisable to check the current exchange rates between your currency and the Brazilian Real before you travel in order to know if you are being offered a good rate. As a rule, the exchange rates are not very good at the airport (as compared to Bureaus of Exchange in the city). You might loose about 15% of your money value.

In São Paulo and elsewhere in Brazil you may use a special smartphone application that will show the nearest bureaus of change and their exchange rates.

Most travelers recommend the use ATMs to withdraw Brazilian money, instead of exchanging cash. Notice that your credit/debit cards will not work in Brazil, unless you have informed your bank in advance that you are travelling abroad.

There are many cash machines at the São Paulo international airport, and everywhere in São Paulo.

GRU ATMs

Of course, after arriving to the airport you will be willing to go to your hotel or hostel. Public transportation is available but its use might be very confusing for someone who does not speak Portuguese.

The easiest and safest way of going from the airport to your accomodation is using a taxi cab. However, it is also expensive. It will cost about US$60 to go from the airport to the hotels recommended by the ISHPSSB meeting local organization. At the São Paulo International Airport you should only take taxis belonging to Guarucoop - the only company that is authorized to offer services at that place. You pay in advance for your taxi at a stand (not to the driver) where you can use credit cards, or pay in US dollars, Euros or Brazilian money.

From the airport to São Paulo downtown the taxi will take around 50 minutes in off-peak times, and about 2 hours in peak time.

Depending on the place where your hotel is, you might use the Airport Bus Service, that is quite confortable and not expensive (the price was R$45,50 - about US$15 - in July 2016). If you arrived at Terminal 3, you must first go to Terminal 2 where you can find the office of this service, at the ground floor. Tickets must be bought at their counter, not at the bus. You should check beforehand whether the Airport Bus Service does pass by your hotel or not.

There are also some airport transfer services available, that should be booked before you arrive to Brazil. The official site of the Guarulhos Airport provides information and links to a few airport transfer services:
